Live set!

by victor on Jul.22, 2010, under event, report

Well, we, Arne and me, have been all around the country for weeks. This time we presented PATTERNS for the Young Art Festival. It was a complete success; we made around 8 shows in two days, fully booked!
Here I present a recording of the live set. The spoken word was made at the location and it was transmitted trough radio signal to the performing audience, only possible to hear it with headphones. The sound art, ambient and electronic music part was performed live and also transmitted by radio signal to all the backpacks.

Transmission arts

by victor on Jul.11, 2010, under inspiration, progress, research

Doing some research I found this amazing Art genre: TRANSMISSION ARTS.
The pioneers, at least as a serious institution are the New York based guys from Free 103.9

In this short PDF from the MIT you can read in general terms what is Transmission Art. I’m pasting a paragraph of it to give an essential idea in a few lines:

In simplest terms “Transmission Arts” is defined as a multiplicity of practices and media working with the idea of transmission or the physical properties of the electromagnetic spectrum (radio). Transmission works often manifest themselves in participatory live art or time-based art, and include, but are not limited to, sound, video, light, installation, and performance. Like the work encompassed by the genre, its lineage is anything but linear.

With this basis I started to sort the possibilities so far and find examples. I came up with 8 different types:

  1. One transmitter to a group of receivers
  2. Pick up devices
  3. Tuning already existing transmissions by the influence of external factors
  4. Receivers or sensors attached to the body
  5. Tuning with special antennas
  6. Multiple transmitters on fixed locations
  7. Wireless networks
  8. Fragmented pieces by space. The distance separates the piece into parts, the transmission embeds it together.

Melkfabriek 001: first public try-out

by arne on May.30, 2010, under development, research

During the ‘Open Atelierdagen’ we did the first testing with the backpacks receiving the sound composition in a big space.

Two enthusiast visitors volunteered to walk around with the backpacks. This gave some interesting insights regarding the perception of other people in the space, the participants ‘feeling part’ of an event and acoustic characteristics of different locations in the space.

Concept: piece about patterns

by arne on May.11, 2010, under progress

We have defined a concept for the project. A piece about patterns.

+ in short
- art game / audiotour / performance
- piece about patterns in sound (rhythms) and patterns in human behavior (reactions)
- backpacks with radio receiver connected to speaker and headphones for audiotour
- audiotour with characters talking about their perspective on patterns & instructions for person listening
- installations in the space with a potential to make sound, to be activated by persons carrying backpacks
- sound piece is transmitted by radio
- backpacks receive sound piece and composition is completed with rhythm sounds from installations

Meeting 19/04: concepting

by arne on Apr.19, 2010, under progress

We are defining concrete concepts week, based on field study / experiments / talks / inspirations of the last month. A moment of reflection.

We planned to create defined concepts for one week, make decisions and build a prototype in one month for the mock-exam.

Starting with fresh concepting-mindset today, the first definitions and idea’s emerged. Download PDF document for pictures of concept sketches.

xbox 360 drumkit in oF

by arne on Apr.13, 2010, under development

+ use xbox drumkit in oF
hooked up a xbox 360 drumkit to an interface in openFrameworks.
after installing some drivers to make the xbox 360 controller work with mac osx, the drumkit is simulating a keyboard interface with the key’s you assign in the driver preference panel.
the oF program uses the keyPressed() function to trigger some sounds.
happy drumming!

Drop straight lines

by victor on Apr.12, 2010, under development, experiment, uncategorized

Well we are making some test to build a strong concept.
Straight line is a human creation, conceptually it is a repetition of dots in space, then the line repeats a few times to create shapes, shapes repeat to create volumes, volumes merge and repeat to create the human world: objects and architectural spaces.

The straight line in soundscape is also a human delivery.

To create a conceptual relation within electronic music (based on samples, loops and repetitions), our actual soundscape and our physical living places I took a small piece of sound, in this case a drop, and pitched it or repeated it to create a complete set of sounds with the same source, then recorded this small track.
